MULTIMETERS

I have a slight fetish for multimeters.  If I could locate all of my meters and get an actual count I would probably have at least a couple of dozen.  Most are cheap to mid priced meters.  I have never really popped for a really expensive meter but some day I will spring for a meter with all the bling a person could want.   For 99% of most peoples electronics tasks an expensive meter is not really necessary, but when you do need the real deal I believe in the Fluke brand.

Every truck I own has a multimeter,  most of my tool boxes have one mixed up in them, there are a couple at the house, one in my computer backpack and even one in the saddle bags of my motorcycle.  There are just so many uses for these devices that I find it hard to do anything electrical without one.

THE RAT SHACK SPECIAL

The above Radio Shack multimeter is probably my favorite meter in current inventory.  It has most of the features you need but is inexpensive enough to not worry about breaking or letting the smoke out of it.  It came with software and a serial cable to tether it to a computer for event logging.  I keep planning to buy another of these or two but my local Rat Shack always seems to be out of stock on this item.

EXTECH LOGIC PROBE

The Extech 381626 is a dual function multimeter and logic probe.  While it does have several multimeter functions it very seldom gets used in this role.  Its main purpose in my kit is as a logic probe. This machine is fairly compact and easy to use.  Determining high or low logic states are simple and quick with this cool tool.

A COUPLE OF SMALL METERS

The GB brand meter on the left actually lives in one of my junk drawers at the house.  It is so generic and has so few features that it never seems to migrate away from its place.  That means I can always find it, thus it seems to get used fairly often.  The pocket sized Craftsman meter is smaller than my wallet and lives permanently in one of the saddle bags on my motorcycle.  When diagnosing electronics on a motorcycle, while on the side of the road, having a meter handy makes the job much less frustrating.
