TREK 400 ELANCE

This was the first true road bike I ever owned.  I purchased it 18 years ago from the same bike shop my latest bike came from.  It is pretty cool to carry a bike into the shop and hand it to a mechanic that wasn't even born when the bike was originally purchased.  It also says a lot about a bike shop that has kept my business for over 20 years.  Check out www.biketownusa.com to see what is now the largest bike shop in N.E. Georgia.

When I purchased this bike it came with a friction shifting Shimano 6 speed parts group.  Over the years it has seen four drive trains.  It went from 6 speed to 7 speed index down tube shifters then to 8 speed S.T.I.   At present it sports a Shimano 105 S.T.I. triple front crank, 8 speed rear cog group.   The reason for the triple crank set is that this bike is usually trimmed out with touring gear.  When you start getting old and fat, triples really help get the camping gear over the hills.

The head set is a Dura-Ace because I love a good head set when I sit up on the bike to stretch my back.  The true measure of a head set is how predictable it is when you are riding with no hands.  The pedals are Speedplay X-3's and the saddle is a W.T.B. mountain bike saddle with chrome moly rails.  The frame is 531 steel and has a very plush ride that resembles a Lazy Boy recliner.

This bike is equipped with the Vistalite "Nightstick" lighting system and a Vistalite "Eclipse" tail light.  It has 3-M black reflective material strategically placed so that it reflects at night without traditional reflectors. It works in the same manner as "Illuminite" clothing.  This bike is mainly relegated to touring and night riding duty so it set up appropriately.
